Portobelo Historical Fort
Portobelo was officially founded on March 20th, 1597 by Francisco de Valverde y Mercado. This place was selected as the perfect spot to set up a port for the trade routes between Peru and Spain due to its topography and harbor conditions. An estimated more than 60% of the wealth from South America going to Europe passed through this port. Due to the great quantities of wealth in gold and silver that would pass through this port, it was fortified heavily to stand against attacks by Pirates. This heavy fortification has left us with some of the most beautiful and interesting ruins in Central America.
Isla Grande (Big Island)
For lunch, we will go to a nondescript house-cum-restaurant with dining tables on the front porch, about a hundred feet from the water. Get your self a huge order of broiled fish sierra, octopus or lobster!
This natural beauty, imposing mass of exuberant vegetation, of white sand beach with coconut palms, in which the ocean shines with differente blue colors has an extension 5 Kms and a widen of 1½ Kms. The island evolved through three stages before being populated. First, agriculture; second, cattles; third, coconut plantation with the arrival of the families: Durán, Catano, Guábila, Ceballos near 1850. Although there is nothing ‘BIG’ about Isla Grande: it’s an underpopulated Caribbean-coast island retreat so small that one reaches it only by open outboard motorboat. And that’s precisely its charm. Come and observe the gentle arc of docks and beaches lined with soda-pop stands and small restaurants in the front porch of someone’s home. This is what impulses the local economic activities such as fishing, coconut plantations and tourism.
"On the beach in front of them local houses, the boats of working fishermen. Behind them, dense jungle"

The Panama Canal (Atlantic Coast) and Historical Tour:
Once you are in our private air conditioned vehicles, we will head down the coast of Colon city into the Panama Canal area (Gatun Locks) after a 20 min bus ride. Upon arrival, the group will head into the observation deck where you will visualize ships and functioning of the Panama Canal with detailed explanations and history. It takes approximately 2 hours for a vessel to complete the transit at Gatun Locks, regardless of whether it's heading northbound or southbound.
A visitor's tower exists and sits high up above the locks themselves. While there is a rather large roof that overhangs the front portion, nice photos can be taken from here.
Furthermore, an authentic ecological tour will follow once the departure of the Gatun Locks. We will take fort San Lorezo! The fort at San Lorenzo was first built during the late 16th century.
King Philip II of Spain ordered a fortress to be built to protect the mouth of the Rio Chagres which was heavily used by commerce and slaves ships. This entry was also the easiest route for pirates and buccaneers looking for gold, and the location of the fort provided an extraordinary view of any approaching ships.
It is one of the most complete forts built in Panama and is full of history of pirates and buccaneers that sealed that water for centuries.
The view to the Chagres River, the Caribbean Ocean and all three sets of locks, those at Gatun might be the most impressive. Due to the fact that all three chambers are connecting, you'll have the opportunity to see the entire process completed at one, rather than in two different stages in Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks.
